Poetry was an apt way to describe Wednesday’s runway show from the house of Valentino, an elegant visual dissertation on the art of haute couture.

Though using many of the house’s “codes” for luxury, like lace, semi-sheer and lingerie, Valentino’s joint creative directors Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli took a bold step in establishing their own aesthetic for this famed label.

Moreover, they also broke new ground with the color palette; banished from their catwalk was the signature sinful red for which Valentino was famed. Even the fabric roses were all black or the muddiest brown.

Where their debut outing was too restrained, too much homage to the house’s traditions, this time Chiuri and Piccioli took a lot more chances and their gutsy performance worked.

Ruffled, layered and semi-sheer shirts and minis, asymmetrical cocktails with twisting floral patterns, Bird of Paradise patchwork rouched chiffon skirts and suggestive transparent blouses all looked great for this designer clothes.

But their best ideas were the raciest; like the pulse-quickening strapless bustier cocktail in tulle worn by model Anna Selezneva that will send young lotharios wild.

Paris has been a season when too many couturiers have generally just re-interpreted their own canon. Not Chiuri and Piccioli, who tried out some pretty audacious new concepts, like their way-over-the-top booties with giant leather back fins or some faintly absurd balloon ball gowns in weird sculpted shapes. But better the odd clanger in a risk-taking collection than predictable banality.

The duo also have a subtle sense of how to stage their own collections, reinforcing the after-midnight romantic mood with giant screens on which were projected smoke whirls. Backed up by a great soundtrack of Tori Amos and Antony and the Johnsons and accessorized with some beautiful lace masks, this was a memorable couture moment.

Chiuri and Piccioli, initially suspected by many critics of being accessories designers promoted above their station, turn out to have the design chops for couture. This pair appears to have real staying power.

Marisa Lee Miller (born August 6, 1978) is an American model best known for her appearances in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issues, and her work for lingerie and designer clothes retailer Victoria’s Secret. After a stint shooting with photographer Mario Testino for fashion magazines like Vogue, Miller began working for both companies in 2002. Miller ranked third in Askmen.com’s “Top 99″ for 2009, after ranking ninth in 2008, twelfth in 2007, and fourteenth in 2006. She added to her popular accolades with the “Hot N’ Fresh” award at the second annual Spike Guys’ Choice Awards.

As of 2009, Miller is an ambassador for the American Cancer Society, to which proceeds from her online store are donated. She also supports the Young Survival Coalition, which seeks to promote awareness of breast cancer in women under 40,as well as environmental organization The Surfrider Foundation, which aims to preserve the world’s oceans and beaches.

Oscar de la Renta kicked off the fashion season for sunny escapes with his Resort 2010 collection on Monday, June 1, in New York.

Sticking to a nautically patriotic color palette of mostly white and navy with highlights in brights, like red and coral, de la Renta used textures, layers, and tiers with tweed suit separates paired off with chiffon and four ply silk. The juxtaposition of aligning a more course material like tweed alongside the sexy flouncy silk played with the senses, engaging the eye and leaving a gentle touch to be desired by the hand.

A dominant linear theme was visible throughout the show, as collarless suit jackets with satin borders further highlighted the duo of sensual textures. Rhinestone and gem stripes running up and across a formal mid-thigh tweeds served to divvy up the dresses into quadrants for symmetry. Satin caftans in a delicate brushstroke print, in an eye-popping freesia hue as well as navy, were both delicate and severe.

For Resort 2010, de la Renta is giving women choices and varieties in eveningwear, ranging from a silver lame mousseline draped gown, to shorter frocks made from black tulle and embroidered silk. Adornments of miniature reflecting mirrored beads, precise provocative cuts, and overpowering ruffled roses were elaborate additions to the clothing that gave the wearer that extra accessory of luxe.

De la Renta is a long time veteran in the fashion world who has successfully withstood the test of time with his niche, as he said after the show, to continuously “make clothes women fall in love with,” season after season. And they follow suit.
